About the Game

In NEO Scavenger, survival is your only objective. You awaken in a frozen wasteland with no memory, and the only way to uncover your past is to stay alive long enough to piece together the clues. Every decision counts in this harsh, unforgiving world.

Each turn, you'll face critical choices: where to explore, what to scavenge, and how to confront the dangers that lurk in the ruins. Your body's needs are constant, pressing concerns. Dehydration, hunger, fatigue, and the biting cold will relentlessly wear you down. Your wits and the skills you choose at the start are your only allies in this desperate fight for existence.

Key Features

  • A Unique, Haunting Setting: Explore a near-future, post-apocalyptic Michigan, a land rife with local cryptids, folklore, and a dark mystery lurking beneath the surface.
  • Deliberate Turn-Based Gameplay: Play at your own pace. Each turn is yours to meticulously plan. The game supports saving and quitting at any time, allowing you to resume your struggle whenever you're ready.
  • The Ultimate Challenge: Permadeath: In NEO Scavenger, death is final. The game is balanced around a single, unforgiving difficulty: permadeath. If you fall, your save is deleted. Every action carries weight.
  • No Arbitrary Progression: Forget grinding for experience points. In NEO Scavenger, your progress comes from mastering the game's mechanics, learning from your mistakes, and leveraging your character's unique strengths.
  • A World of Infinite Replayability: Much of the map, including the location of ruins, creatures, and weather patterns, is randomized with each new game, offering a fresh challenge every time.
  • Your Path, Your Story: Will you embark on a quest to uncover your lost identity, the events that led to the apocalypse, and the identity of those hunting you? Or will you simply test your survival skills against the elements and the desperate inhabitants of the wasteland? The choice is yours.
  • Deep Character Customization: Select a unique combination of abilities and flaws at the start of each playthrough. Different combinations can unlock new abilities and even alter quest paths.
  • Resourceful Crafting: An extensive crafting system allows for creative substitutions. Fashion a rifle scope from half a pair of binoculars or construct a noise trap from a pill bottle and pebbles.
  • Desperate and Detailed Combat: Engage in tactical combat with a range of unique moves, from "Tackle" and "Kick While Down" to "Demand Surrender" and "Threaten."
  • Realistic Wound Simulation: Creatures, including yourself, suffer from a complex wound system that includes multiple injury locations, the risk of infection, bleeding, and the constant struggle to manage pain.
  • Authentic Survival Mechanics: Experience a realistic metabolism system where hypothermia, fatigue, thirst, hunger, disease, intoxication, and the need for shelter are all meticulously tracked.
  • Intricate Inventory Management: A complex inventory system with designated slots for holding, wearing, and storing items in containers. Optimize your grid space and manage encumbrance effectively.
  • Strategic Hex-Based Exploration: Navigate a vast hex-based world map encompassing ruins, hills, forests, and plains. Line-of-sight, elevation, and the cycle of day and night are crucial tactical considerations.
  • Master the Art of Tracking: Follow the spoor of creatures left on the map, or skillfully conceal your own tracks to evade pursuit.
  • Stealth and Evasion: Utilize hiding mechanics to avoid detection while traveling the map or during tense story encounters.
  • Primal Hunting: Trap small game for sustenance and fur, or track and take down larger prey for valuable resources.
  • Digital Archaeology: Employ your hacking skills to unlock scavenged laptops, cellphones, and tablets, extracting vital paydata or delving into personal files.
  • Forage for Survival: Search for edible plants and water sources, using specialized skills to differentiate between safe sustenance and dangerous toxins.
  • Atmospheric Soundtrack: Immerse yourself in the loneliness and desperation of the wasteland with a haunting soundtrack composed by Josh Culler.
  • Dynamic Creature AI: Encounter creatures with their own motivations – hunting, scavenging, and hoarding. Their morale can influence their decisions, and some may even form alliances to pose a greater threat.
  • Dynamic Weather System: Experience weather that mirrors real-world autumn conditions, with temperature, rainfall, and day/night cycles. If you survive long enough, you might even witness the first snowfall.
  • The Sanctuary of Detroit: Find temporary refuge in one of humanity's last bastions of safety. Trade, seek medical attention, and uncover clues within the neon-drenched, cyberpunk-styled city.
